BABAK ZANJANI ANNOUNCES NEW RAILWAY PROJECT CONNECTION BETWEEN IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN, SPARKS DEBATE ON HIS PRISON STATUS
In a surprising move, Babak Zanjani, a prominent figure whose presence or absence from prison has long been a mystery, shared a photograph of himself yesterday, announcing a groundbreaking project by Dot-Varan Rail to establish a railway connection between Iran and Afghanistan. The image shows Zanjani alongside a member of a Taliban security group.
Zanjani posted the photo on Twitter, marking the inauguration of a railway line in Afghanistan. This revelation has raised questions about his current status, especially after the judiciary spokesperson confirmed that Zanjani is on leave from prison.
According to a tweet from an account believed to belong to Zanjani, Dot-Varan Rail plans to launch its transit wagon route from Amirabad and Sarakhs ports in Iran to Rozanak, a location 62 kilometers beyond the Iran-Afghanistan border, in the coming weeks.
Asgar Jahangir, responding to journalists’ inquiries about Zanjani’s legal status, stated, “Zanjani has been in prison for 11 years without any leave. Therefore, he is currently on leave this year, under the supervision of officials.”
This development has not only highlighted Zanjani’s ongoing influence in major infrastructure projects but also reignited discussions about the terms of his leave from prison.
